SPRING CONFERENCE 2009
The Lee County Career & Technical Center FBLA chapter attended their annual Spring Conference on Monday, March 16, at the University of Virginia's College at Wise. The Future Business Leaders of America, along with Advisor Elaine Day, attended the conference in order to participate in regional elections and to correspond with other local FBLA chapters. After a welcome from David Kendall, Business & Economics Department Chairman, LCCTC's - FBLA member Hunter Slemp presented a response to Dr. Kendall's welcome and thanked him and the college for their commitment to the FBLA organization. Hunter also gave special recognition and thanks to the FBLA Regional Director, Betty Humphreys, for playing a vital role in strengthening the organization and helping in FBLA's growth of leadership skills.
The Conference also served as the awards ceremony for the 2009 Regional FBLA Competitions. The various competitions open to all 500+ FBLA members from Lee, Wise, Russell, and Dickenson Counties, range from Accounting to Public Speaking. LCCTC-FBLA had 24 members participate in regional competitions. SPRING CONFERENCE 2008
The 2008 Virginia FBLA State leadership Conference was held on April 11-12 at the Hyatt Regency Reston. The conference, which also served as the home for the 2008 FBLA State Competitions, welcomed students from many chapters throughout the state. The Lee County Career & Technical Center was represented by four students: Seniors Stacie Newton and Chelsey Slemp competing in Accounting 1 & 2 respectively; freshman David Woodward competing in Computer Applications; and senior Jordan Rasnic, who attended the conference as a delegate. Newton, Slemp, Woodward and Rasnic, along with club advisor Elaine Day, traveled to Reston the day before the conference and were able to spend the day sightseeing in Washington, D.C., where they were able, among many other things, to visit the World War II memorial.
On the first day of the conference, approximately, 1,700 FBLA members and advisors from around the state were gathered together in the Grand Ballroom. They were welcomed by the State officers and were treated to the keynote address by renowned inspirational speaker, Craig Hillier. The next day started the competitions. Newton, Slemp, and Woodward went head to head against hundreds of other students hoping to prove their knowledge of different aspects of the business world. Though the students represented Lee County Career & Technical Center well, they did not rank high enough to attend the national Conference which will be held in Atlanta, Georgia. Club advisor Elaine Day stated, "I really hope that the students can take this experience back to the other members and inspire them and others to play an active role in the FBLA organization. If they can do that, then we will definitely be heading to nationals next year."
