All software used to operate this system is either made by Microsoft or developed using
Microsoft Products. However, there are still a few die-hard Netscape browser users and
WordPerfect 6.1 users.
The O/S for the library software is Microsoft Windows NT 3.51. The library database uses
Microsoft SQL Server 6.0 and the software for the library client was developed using
Microsoft Access. The LANs in each school have a server running Microsoft Windows NT
3.51. This server is used to run WINS and DHCP which simplifies management of IP
addresses and network naming.
Currently, the Web server and the proxy server are on the same machine. We use Microsoft
Proxy Server and Microsoft Information Server running on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. Of the
324 machines on-line, more than 250 are running Windows 95. The remainder are running
Windows 3.X.
The peer to peer networking capability of Microsoft Windows 95 is used to protect and
control valuable CD ROM titles within each library. The CD ROM discs are kept on drives
behind the checkout counter while still being accessible from machines on the library research
floor.
As you may have noticed, the database server for the library and NewsWeb is isolated by our
firewall from our Web server. The method for protecting our database from Internet hackers,
yet still responding to requests from the web server, is currently considered proprietary
information by our consultant.
