A three prong approach has been taken by Lee County Public Schools to prevent student
exposure to inappropriate material or exploitation by strangers. First, the proxy server log is
reviewed to determine if any contact has been made with any INTERNET domain that would
obviously contain objectionable material. These sites are then added to our inappropriate site
list. The inappropriate site list consists of sites found by reviewing the log, sites determined
to be inappropriate by a proprietary method of Educational Software, LLC, and sites added by
employees of the school system. This list of I/P addresses is then updated on the proxy
server to prevent their being accessed from within the school system.
In addition to the above programming initiatives, we insure that everyone signs an
inappropriate use contract to ensure compliance to the school systems inappropriate use
policy.
Even with these precautions, it is important to note that there is not any absolute means to
ensure complete protection from inappropriate site access by students. Supervision by the
teaching staff is the final level of protection.
